About GRO VR
GRO VR is building the next generation of multiplayer VR experiences on Meta Quest. We're a game studio that takes immersive, social gameplay seriously — and we're looking for engineers who do too.
The Role
We're looking for a mid-to-senior Backend Developer to own the multiplayer and game server infrastructure for our flagship VR title. This is a foundational role — you'll be making architectural decisions that define how thousands of players experience the game together in real time.
You'll work closely with gameplay engineers, designers, and platform teams to build systems that are fast, secure, and built to scale.
What You'll Do
- Design and build the multiplayer game server architecture from the ground up — session management, matchmaking, authoritative game state, and real-time sync
- Own the Photon Fusion networking stack end-to-end — from initial setup through scaling to high player concurrency, including room management, server-side logic, and load distribution
- Solve hard concurrency problems: race conditions, shared state under load, tick-rate optimisation, and latency compensation
- Build secure server-side systems — anti-cheat foundations, input validation, DDoS resilience, and secure client-server communication
- Build and maintain the player data backend — profiles, progression, inventory, leaderboards, and persistent state — with a strong focus on consistency, availability, and security
- Design for scale: ensure both the Photon layer and player data systems hold up under concurrent load spikes without data loss or race conditions
- Collaborate with Unity/Quest client engineers to define clean client-server contracts
What We're Looking For
Must-haves:
- 4–8 years of backend engineering experience, with meaningful time spent on real-time or multiplayer systems
- Strong fundamentals in concurrent programming — you understand threading models, locking, lock-free data structures, and where each applies
- Hands-on experience with Photon Fusion or similar— you've scaled it, debugged it under load, and know its limits
- Solid working knowledge in C#, Node.js, or Python — you're not religious about the language, you pick the right tool
- Understanding of game server security: preventing cheating, validating game state server-side, and securing exposed endpoints
- Experience building player data systems — persistent state, progression, inventory, or similar — with attention to consistency and concurrent write handling
Nice-to-haves:
- Experience shipping a multiplayer game title (any platform)
- Familiarity with Meta Quest platform services (Multiplayer, Presence, OVR SDK)
- Knowledge of cloud game server orchestration (PlayFab,Agones, Nakama, etc)
- Experience with performance profiling and network optimization for real-time games
- Tech Context
- Platform: Meta Quest (standalone, Android-based)
- Client engine: Unity
- Networking: Photon Fusion (decided stack — deep experience required)
- Languages: C++, C#, Node.js, Python — use what's right
- Infrastructure: Cloud-hosted game servers (architecture TBD with you)
Why Join
- Direct ownership over one of the most technically complex parts of the product
- In-office team in Bengaluru — fast feedback loops, no async bottlenecks
- Work on a product category (social VR on Quest) that's early and genuinely interesting
Location:
- Work from Office - Bangalore
