About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Engineer with extensive data science experience to take ownership of our data layer. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in establishing and maintaining the infrastructure that supports our data collection, processing, and analysis efforts. Your work will initially focus on ensuring data integrity, reliability, and scalability within our systems. As the platform evolves, you will expand your responsibilities to include developing machine learning models, creating personalized user experiences, and building recommendation systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a pioneering project that combines health technology, data science, and community-driven solutions, with the potential for long-term growth within the company.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a strong background in backend development, particularly with TypeScript or similar languages such as Python, Go, or Java. You should have hands-on experience working with data pipelines, including data ingestion, transformation, aggregation, and scoring of structured data. Familiarity with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, and ORM frameworks is essential. Experience with machine learning techniques—such as recommendation systems, ranking models, anomaly detection, or personalization—is highly desirable, even if only at a lightweight level. Additionally, you should be comfortable working with large datasets, time-series data, or data-heavy consumer products. The ideal candidate is self-directed, capable of managing end-to-end project execution, and eager to grow with a fast-paced, innovative startup environment. A commitment to long-term collaboration and the ability to overlap at least 3-4 hours with US Pacific time for communication are important.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and refine data pipelines that ingest data from diverse sources, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Derive meaningful metrics from raw data by aggregating, categorizing, and analyzing behavioral patterns, even in noisy datasets.
- Implement and enhance composite scoring algorithms that combine multiple signals into intuitive, user-facing scores.
- Structure data to enable rapid, contextual analysis by large language models (LLMs), facilitating personalized user experiences.
- Develop machine learning models to personalize content delivery, predict user engagement, detect anomalies, and identify correlations.
- Explore lightweight recommendation and ranking systems to enhance content discovery across a growing library.
- Optimize API performance, background job processing, and maintain data integrity throughout the data pipeline.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Maintain high standards of code quality, documentation, and system reliability, adhering to best practices in software development.
Benefits
As a fully remote, contract-based position, we offer a competitive monthly rate commensurate with experience. The role is designed for full-time engagement, requiring an availability of at least 50 hours per week, with overlapping hours of 3-4 hours with US Pacific Time for meetings and collaboration.
