About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Developer to join NurseBee on a contract basis. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing and developing scalable, robust APIs that form the backbone of our platform. Your expertise will be crucial in integrating large language models (LLMs) and machine learning (ML) workflows into our production environment, ensuring that our AI tools operate seamlessly and efficiently. You will own the data layer, optimize database schemas, and implement secure and efficient data management practices. Working closely with the frontend engineering team, you will contribute to building a cohesive, high-performing system that supports our mission to revolutionize healthcare staffing. This role offers high autonomy, allowing you to take ownership of your projects from conception to deployment, while collaborating with a talented team of professionals and reporting directly to the founding team.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with proven experience in backend development and AI/ML integration. Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- At least 3 years of experience building production APIs using Node.js with TypeScript, employing frameworks such as Express.js or similar.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience with Python, including proficiency with libraries such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, or XGBoost.
- Solid understanding of PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and transaction management.
- Experience designing RESTful APIs, including handling HTTP methods, status codes, authentication patterns, and versioning strategies.
- Hands-on experience integrating AI/ML APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar large language models, along with embeddings and vector search techniques.
- Proven track record of deploying at least one ML model in a production environment, involving tasks like classification, ranking, or regression.
- Familiarity with AWS services including EC2, ECS, RDS, S3, and basic networking concepts.
- Strong understanding of authentication and security protocols such as JWT, bcrypt, RBAC, HTTPS, and TLS.
- Experience delivering at least two web applications from scratch into production environments.
- Experience integrating multiple external APIs with robust error handling and retry logic.
- Experience working with applications handling sensitive data, including PII, financial, or healthcare information.
Responsibilities
As a Backend Developer at NurseBee, your key responsibilities will include:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and secure APIs to support our healthcare staffing platform.
- Integrating large language models (LLMs) and machine learning workflows into the production environment, ensuring reliable and efficient performance.
- Owning and optimizing the data layer, including database schema design, query optimization, and transaction management.
- Collaborating closely with frontend engineers to ensure seamless integration and data flow between backend and frontend components.
- Implementing security best practices, including authentication, authorization, and data protection measures.
- Deploying and monitoring ML models and AI tools as REST APIs or microservices.
- Integrating external APIs, managing error handling, retries, and ensuring high availability.
- Participating in code reviews, testing, and documentation to maintain high code quality and system reliability.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of our development processes, including CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation.
