Job Description – Pump Automation Engineer
Department: Automation / SCADA / Water Infrastructure Projects
Position: Pump Automation Engineer – SCADA, PLC & Remote Monitoring
Work Location: Machohally, Off Magadi Main Road, Bengaluru

Reporting To: Project Head / Business Head – Automation Projects
1. Job Purpose
The Pump Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining automation systems for pumps, water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, water distribution lines, pumping stations, and remote operating systems.
The candidate must have strong practical knowledge of SCADA, PLC, HMI, remote monitoring systems, actuators, control valves, sensors, flow meters, pressure transmitters, level sensors, VFD panels, MCC panels, and complete pump automation logic.
The role requires both office-based design work and site-level execution, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer coordination.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. SCADA, PLC & HMI Automation

PLC Programming
Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic for pump automation, valve operation, tank level control, pressure control, flow control, and interlocking systems.
SCADA Development
Design and develop SCADA screens for WTP, STP, pumping stations, overhead tanks, reservoirs, and water distribution networks.
HMI Programming
Develop user-friendly HMI screens for operators to monitor pumps, valves, motors, alarms, flow, pressure, and system status.
Remote Monitoring
Implement remote monitoring systems for real-time data viewing, pump status, alerts, alarms, and fault analysis.
Remote Operation
Enable remote start/stop, auto/manual operation, pump scheduling, valve control, and safe system operation from control rooms or remote platforms.
Alarm & Fault Logic
Create alarm logic for dry run, overload, low pressure, high pressure, no flow, valve failure, sensor failure, communication failure, and emergency conditions.
B. Pump Automation & Control System

Develop automation logic for single pump, multi-pump, duty/standby pump, cascade operation, and pressure-based pump control.
VFD Integration
Integrate pumps with VFDs for speed control, energy saving, pressure maintenance, and flow control.
MCC & Control Panel Understanding
Understand MCC panels, control wiring, power wiring, protection circuits, starters, relays, contactors, and interlocks.
Auto / Manual Operation
Ensure proper selection and safe operation of Auto, Manual, Local, and Remote modes.
Energy Monitoring
Support monitoring of power consumption, motor load, pump running hours, and efficiency.
Preventive Alerts
Create alerts for pump maintenance, abnormal vibration, high current, low flow, high pressure, and other operational risks.
C. Water Infrastructure Application Knowledge
The candidate must have working knowledge of automation and remote operation for:

Water Distribution Lines
Remote monitoring of flow, pressure, valve position, pump operation, leakage indication, and zone-wise water supply.
Pumping Stations
Automation of pumps, sump levels, overhead tank filling, pressure boosting, and remote fault monitoring.
Water Supply Networks
Monitoring of flow meters, pressure sensors, control valves, reservoirs, tanks, and pipeline distribution.
Irrigation / Public Water Projects
Support automation for government water supply, lift irrigation, and rural/urban water distribution projects.
3. Instrumentation & Field Device Knowledge
The candidate must understand selection, installation, wiring, calibration, and troubleshooting of the following:

Communication Protocols
Basic working knowledge of Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, RS485, Ethernet, GSM/GPRS/4G communication.
4. Project Design & Documentation Responsibility
The engineer should be capable of preparing and supporting the following project documents:

Site Survey Report
Visit sites and prepare requirement reports for WTP, STP, pumping stations, and water distribution systems.
Commissioning Report
Prepare FAT, SAT, commissioning checklist, trial run report, and handover documents.
O&M Manual
Support preparation of operation and maintenance manuals for customers and operators.
5. Site Execution & Commissioning Responsibility

6. Technical Skills Required

7. Experience & Qualification

Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, Automation, or related engineering field.
Experience
4 to 8 years preferred in pump automation, SCADA, PLC, WTP, STP, water distribution, or industrial automation projects.
Industry Exposure
Water treatment, sewage treatment, pumping stations, irrigation, municipal water supply, industrial water systems, or process automation.
Site Experience
Must be ready to visit sites, support installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer handover.
8. Mandatory Requirements
- Must have hands-on experience in SCADA, PLC, HMI, and pump automation.
- Must understand remote monitoring and remote operation of pumps and water systems.
- Must know sensors, actuators, valves, pressure transmitters, flow meters, and level instruments.
- Must be able to work on WTP, STP, water lines, pumping stations, and water distribution projects.
- Must be willing to travel to customer sites for survey, commissioning, troubleshooting, and handover.
- Must be able to prepare proper technical documents and commissioning reports.
- Must work with full accountability and avoid mistakes in automation logic and site execution.
- No work-from-home approach; this role requires office, plant, and site-level involvement.
9. Final Role Summary
The Pump Automation Engineer must be a practical, hands-on automation professional who can independently handle SCADA, PLC, HMI, remote monitoring, pump control, field instrumentation, actuators, valves, VFD integration, and commissioning for WTP, STP, water distribution, and pumping station projects.
The candidate should be capable of designing the automation system, executing the project at site, solving technical issues, training operators, and ensuring reliable remote operation of complete water infrastructure systems.
