Role Summary
We are looking for a hands-on Automation Engineer to own PLC programming, HMI development, controls integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning across Demolish Foods' production and pilot-line equipment.
The role will have a strong focus on Siemens TIA Portal and Siemens PLC architecture, including S7-1200/1500 PLCs, HMIs, SINAMICS drives, servo systems, VFDs, sensors, actuators, and industrial communication networks.
The ideal candidate is someone who can move comfortably between control logic, electrical systems, and the physical machine: translating equipment requirements into robust automation architecture, programming complete operating sequences, commissioning systems on the shop floor, diagnosing failures, and improving machine reliability and performance.
This role is not limited to writing PLC code. You will be responsible for making automated equipment work reliably as an integrated system - from I/O and controls architecture through commissioning, fault recovery, operator usability, and production readiness.
Responsibilities
- Translate machine and process requirements into automation architecture, control philosophy, I/O requirements, operating sequences, interlocks, alarms, and commissioning plans.
- Prepare and maintain PLC I/O lists, tag lists, and PLC/HMI/drive IP address schemes for new and existing control panels
- Configure CPU, DI/DO/AI modules, HMI hardware, SINAMICS servo drives, servo motors and encoders, and VFDs in Siemens TIA Portal
- Develop and structure PLC tag databases, physical I/O logic, and system-status/health monitoring logic
- Develop motor/VFD and servo control blocks and build machine interlock/permissive matrices
- Program complete automatic sequences, including sequence timeouts, interlocks, fault handling, and recovery logic
- Integrate various sensors with PLCs using industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, and RS-485.
- Design and build HMI screens, including machine overview, manual control, servo/VFD control and diagnostics, alarm and alarm-history systems, and maintenance/I/O diagnostic screens
- Coordinate the cabling and setup of PLC panels and junction boxes with motors, drives, sensors, and actuators on mechanical hardware
- Work closely with mechanical, process, and operations teams to troubleshoot equipment issues and improve throughput, consistency, and usability
- Maintain commissioning documentation, test records, and as-built control documentation
- Ensure compliance with relevant electrical, controls, and machine safety standards
Requirements
- B.Tech, M.Tech, or MS in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in PLC programming and HMI development, ideally with Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/1500 or equivalent)
- Practical experience configuring and commissioning servo drives (e.g., SINAMICS), VFDs, encoders, and I/O modules
- Experience developing automatic sequence logic, interlock/permissive matrices, and fault-handling and recovery routines
- Strong understanding of electrical panel wiring, I/O loop checking, and safety circuits (E-stops, guarding interlocks)
- Strong understanding of mechanical automation systems, including conveyors, gearboxes, motors, and drive mechanisms
- Experience commissioning equipment on the shop floor, including manual-mode testing, dry runs, load trials, and cycle-time optimisation
- Comfortable working directly with panel vendors, fabricators, and cross-functional mechanical, process, and operations teams
- Working knowledge of SCADA systems is recommended
- Exposure to food/process equipment, sensors, instrumentation, and/or scripting (Python, C++) is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical problems, root causes, risks, and recommended actions.
