Job Description Assistant General Manager – Business Development (India Operations)
Designation: Assistant General Manager – Business Development
Reporting To: General Manager
Role Positioning:
This role is positioned as second in line of command within the Business Development function and will act as the primary growth driver for PSU, EPC, and large infrastructure projects across India. The incumbent will be expected to operate with near-GM autonomy, represent the organization at senior client and government levels, and step in for the GM when required for commercial and strategic engagements.
Seniority-Adjusted Role Summary (PSU / EPC Focus)
The Assistant General Manager – Business Development will lead national-level business development initiatives focused on Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), EPC contractors, and large private infrastructure developers. The role requires deep expertise in government tendering, high-value project bidding, and long-cycle sales closures related to steel fabrication and hot-dip galvanizing services.
The position demands strategic ownership of the sales pipeline, direct accountability for revenue growth, and close coordination with factory operations to ensure execution feasibility and margin protection.
Enhanced Experience Benchmark (GM-Level)
- 15–20 years of progressive experience in Business Development / Sales / Marketing
- Mandatory exposure to:
- PSU projects (Central & State Government)
- EPC / infrastructure / transmission / railways / oil & gas / renewable / highways sectors
- Demonstrated leadership in:
- High-value tendering and bidding (INR multi-crore projects)
- Negotiation and closure of long-gestation government contracts
- Experience representing the organization in:
- Pre-bid meetings
- Technical & commercial negotiations
- Client audits and compliance reviews
PSU / EPC-Specific Responsibilities (Added Emphasis)
- Own and manage PSU and EPC key accounts at a national level.
- Track and evaluate tender opportunities across:
- GeM Portal
- CPPP (Central Public Procurement Portal)
- State government procurement portals
- Lead pre-qualification submissions, consortium coordination (if applicable), and bid strategy formulation.
- Engage with EPC contractors during design and BOQ finalization stages to ensure specification alignment with company capabilities.
- Drive repeat business and long-term rate contracts with PSUs and EPC majors.
Authority & Decision-Making Level
- Authorized to lead commercial discussions and pricing strategy within approved frameworks.
- Acts as GM’s nominee for business development meetings, client visits, and pre-bid conferences when required.
- Provides strategic market inputs to top management for capacity planning and geographic expansion.
Language & Stakeholder Interface (Reinforced)
- English – Primary language for tenders, contracts, and national clients
- Hindi – Essential for PSU, EPC, and government stakeholder interactions across North and Central India
- Tamil – Mandatory for factory coordination, local authorities, and regional clients
