Associate Vice President – Application Support & Automation
Role Overview
The
Associate Vice President – Application Support & Automation is a senior leadership role within the Technology Operations Planning & Support (TOPS) organization at LPL Financial. This position provides strategic oversight and execution leadership for Tier 2/3 application support, production operations, intelligent automation, and operational analytics across critical brokerage and enterprise platforms.
The AVP is accountable for ensuring
production stability, operational excellence, automation scalability, and proactive risk management, while serving as a trusted escalation point for senior technology leaders, product organizations, and business stakeholders. This role blends
technology leadership, data‑driven decision‑making, and organizational influence, operating within a SAFe‑Agile environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Oversight
- Provide strategic direction and operational leadership for application support and automation services across multiple business‑critical platforms.
- Act as a senior escalation point for high‑severity production issues, regulatory inquiries, and complex cross‑platform incidents.
- Partner with executive stakeholders in Technology, Product, Risk, and Operations to align operational priorities with enterprise objectives.
- Influence and shape the evolution of the TOPS operating model to support scale, resiliency, and modernization.
Application Support & Production Operations
- Oversee Tier 2/3 application support, ensuring system availability, performance, and reliability across the LPL application ecosystem.
- Ensure consistent execution of incident management, problem management, and defect management processes with a strong focus on root cause elimination.
- Govern post‑production reviews and ensure preventative controls and contingency plans are implemented.
- Ensure service level agreements (SLAs), regulatory commitments, and operational risk standards are met or exceeded.
- Provide leadership during production “fire drills,” regulatory reviews, and client‑impacting incidents.
Automation & Intelligent Operations
- Provide executive oversight of digital workforce and automation platforms, ensuring alignment to business outcomes and risk standards.
- Identify, prioritize, and sponsor automation and robotics initiatives to improve efficiency, scalability, and quality.
- Guide the development and enhancement of automation solutions leveraging Python, Java, JavaScript, VBA, SQL, AWS, and related technologies.
- Champion the use of analytics, machine learning, and AI‑driven insights to enable action‑oriented intelligence and proactive operations.
- Ensure automation solutions are secure, resilient, well‑governed, and maintainable.
Data, Analytics & Decision Support
- Drive the use of data analysis, trend identification, and statistical reporting to proactively identify risks, anomalies, and optimization opportunities.
- Translate complex operational data into executive‑level insights that inform strategic decisions.
- Oversee development of dashboards, metrics, and reporting that provide transparency into operational health and performance.
- Exercise judgment and independent decision‑making with financial, client, and operational implications.
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop senior support analysts, automation engineers, and application support professionals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, learning, and operational excellence.
- Partner with leadership to assess skills, define development paths, and build future leadership capability within TOPS.
- Promote collaboration across cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced Agile environment.
Process Improvement & Governance
- Champion process maturity using Agile, SAFe, Six Sigma, and ITSM best practices.
- Ensure high‑quality documentation, runbooks, support artifacts, and operational standards.
- Strengthen risk management, change management, and production governance practices across the supported portfolio.
- Continuously assess and improve delivery effectiveness, resiliency, and operational controls.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; advanced degree preferred.
- 14-18 years of progressive experience in application support, production operations, automation, or technology operations.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing complex production environments and cross‑functional teams.
- Hands‑on understanding of AWS, SQL Server/MS SQL, Oracle, Linux/Unix, and enterprise application platforms.
- Strong experience with incident management, problem management, root cause analysis, and operational risk management.
- Development and automation background using Python, Java, JavaScript, VBA, PL/SQL, and ETL tools.
- Experience operating in Agile / SAFe technology organizations.
- Exceptional executive‑level communication, stakeholder management, and decision‑making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Financial Services / Broker‑Dealer industry experience.
- Experience with WorkFusion or other RPA platforms.
- Oracle Financial Services, Mantas, Actimize, or regulatory reporting platforms.
- Background supporting Product Management organizations.
- Experience presenting to executive leadership and regulatory stakeholders.
