Job Description – Mw Engineer (apache Solr)

Role Summary
The Associate Professional Middleware Engineer specializing in Apache Solr is responsible for managing and optimizing enterprise search infrastructure. This role ensures that Solr-based search platforms deliver fast, relevant, and scalable search experiences integrated into middleware and application layers.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy, configure, and administer Apache Solr clusters and SolrCloud environments
- Design and manage Solr schemas, collections, shards, replicas, and indexing pipelines
- Tune Solr query performance, caching strategies, and JVM settings for optimal throughput
- Integrate Solr with middleware systems and data pipelines for real-time and batch indexing
- Implement Solr security including authentication, authorization, and TLS configuration
- Monitor Solr cluster health, query latency, indexing rates, and storage usage
- Troubleshoot search relevancy issues, indexing failures, and cluster split-brain scenarios
- Collaborate with application teams on query design, faceting, highlighting, and scoring customization
Required Skills & Experience
- 7-10 years of middleware/infrastructure experience with 3+ years specializing in Apache Solr
- Hands-on expertise with SolrCloud, ZooKeeper coordination, and distributed indexing
- Experience with Solr schema design including field types, dynamic fields, and copy fields
- Proficiency in Solr query language (SolrQL), faceting, grouping, and relevancy tuning
- Knowledge of data ingestion tools (DataImportHandler, Solr Cell, Kafka-Solr connectors)
- Unix/Linux administration and Python/Shell scripting skills
- Understanding of JVM performance tuning (heap sizing, GC configuration) for Solr
GOOD TO HAVE
- Experience with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch and ability to compare with Solr
- Knowledge of Apache Lucene internals and custom analyzer development
- Exposure to cloud-hosted search platforms (AWS OpenSearch, Azure Cognitive Search)
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline
- Apache or cloud search certifications are advantageous
