Role Overview

The Associate Fellow – Agriculture will play a critical role in leading and executing policy research, stakeholder consultations, and project implementation within the Employment and Livelihoods vertical, with a specific focus on agriculture and rural economies.

The role requires a strong understanding of agricultural policy, agri-economics, rural livelihoods, and value chains, along with the ability to work closely with government stakeholders, farmer organisations, and development sector partners.

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience in agriculture policy research, rural development, agri-value chains, and field-based programme implementation.

Key Responsibilities

Policy Research & Analysis

• Lead and contribute to policy research on agriculture, rural livelihoods, and food systems.
• Analyse agricultural value chains, agrarian structures, and rural employment ecosystems.
• Develop policy briefs, research reports, and knowledge products for government and stakeholders.

Stakeholder Engagement & Government Liaison

• Engage with government agencies, agricultural departments, and rural development institutions.
• Liaise with farmer producer organisations (FPOs), agri-businesses, and civil society organisations.
• Facilitate stakeholder consultations, roundtables, and policy dialogues.

Programme Design & Implementation

• Design and support implementation of agriculture and livelihood-focused programmes.
• Contribute to field-based research and pilot interventions in rural areas.
• Support monitoring, evaluation, and learning for ongoing projects.

Knowledge Management & Communication

• Document research findings, case studies, and programme learnings.
• Present insights to policymakers, partners, and internal teams.
• Contribute to PIF’s knowledge outputs on agriculture and rural livelihoods.

Qualifications & Experience

• Master’s degree or PhD in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, Agronomy, Natural Resource Management, or related disciplines.
• 3–5 years of relevant experience in agriculture, rural livelihoods, or policy research.
• Experience working on agriculture policy, value chains, or rural development programmes.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong understanding of agri-economics, rural livelihoods, and agricultural value chains in India.
• Knowledge of soil health, crop systems, and natural resource management.
• Strong research, analytical, and strategic thinking skills.
• Experience in stakeholder engagement with government, FPOs, NGOs, and rural communities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
