Key Objectives of the Job
The NGO is looking to scale up the efforts to prevent CSA and heal those affected by it, with our third and new phase of growth, which shifts our model from direct Programme delivery to a multi-state, government-led multiplier approach, training cluster coordinators across states to reach children and parents at a significantly greater scale. By adopting this approach, NGO will be able to reach children and parents with key concepts of Personal Safety Education and awareness on CSA much more quickly. This approach will enable thr NGO to reach 19 million children, empowering them to be safe. We are looking for a strategic Associate Director / Director - Communications to design and drive a strategic communications roadmap that supports this new phase of scale-up, lead the NGO's storytelling for global funders and governments, and build the team and systems needed to scale our impact.
What we expect of you:
Communications Strategy and brand clarity
- Ability to design and drive a clear communications strategy which aligns with NGO's mission of prevention, healing, and systemic change
- Lead the development of specialized messaging for government stakeholders, cluster coordinators, and state education departments, ensuring Personal Safety Education (PSE) is seen as an essential, non-negotiable part of the public school curriculum
- Crafting a consistent brand voice that balances professionalism, empathy, and advocacy, tailored for government partners, funders, NGOs, media and the public
Digital and creative leadership
- Architect and oversee a sophisticated digital infrastructure—spanning web, social, and emerging platforms—engineered to engage millions of stakeholders while proactively safeguarding institutional reputation
Media, Visibility & Thought Leadership
- Identify speaking engagements, conferences, and sector platforms to build visibility for the NGO and its leadership
- Support media outreach and relationship building to strengthen coverage
- Contribute to the development of flagship external communication assets including reports, campaigns, and major announcements
Campaigns and Events
- Conceptualize and lead flagship campaigns that build public awareness of CSA prevention and support scaling goals
- Conceptualize, plan, and execute communication strategies for fundraising campaigns, awareness drives, and events based on the annual plan
Contextual and ethical sensitivity / Values-Based Crisis Leadership
- Lead the response to sensitive issues with professional maturity, ensuring commitment to child protection and ethical consent remains uncompromised during rapid growth
- Deep understanding of child rights, trauma-informed principles, and the nuances of discussing child sexual abuse without re-traumatising
- Commitment to ethical communication: confidentiality, informed consent for stories, and avoiding sensationalism while still driving awareness and policy change
Donor Communications
- Strengthen donor communication journeys across touch points with consistent and impact-driven narratives across all media platforms
- Transform complex scaling metrics into compelling "impact narratives" for global funders and institutional donors, showcasing the efficiency and reach of the cluster-coordinator model
- Design consistent, high-touch communication journeys that keep partners and funders deeply invested in the long-term success of NGO's scale up efforts
Leadership, team, and budget management
- Build, mentor and lead a communications team of 3 to 5 people across PR and media, digital and social, and creative, setting clear goals and managing external agencies where needed
- Strategically manage the communications budget, prioritizing high-impact investments in our journey toward 19 million children to be safe
- Job Challenge Navigating the reputational and ethical complexities of communicating on child sexual abuse, including managing sensitive media situations, protecting survivor dignity, and maintaining trust with funders, government partners, and the public simultaneously
- Specialized job competencies
✓ Strategic planning skills to develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that align with mission and goals.
✓ Ability to set communications KPIs, track performance across channels, and report on communications impact to leadership and funders.
✓ Strong writing skills with ability to translate complex programmatic work into compelling narratives.
✓ Stakeholder management skills in building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including media contacts.
✓ Analytical skills in analyzing data and insights to measure, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts and make data-driven decisions.
✓ Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, Hindi and/or other regional languages. Knowledge of other Indian languages is a plus.
✓ Proficiency in digital communication tools, including social media platforms and content management systems.
- Educational Qualification
✓ Master’s degree in mass communication, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, or related fields.
✓ Minimum 10-12 years of progressive experience in communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
✓ Development sector experience preferred but candidates from adjacent sectors including public health, gender, mental health, and journalism will be considered.
✓ Demonstrated experience in media relations (press releases, media advisories, crisis-sensitive responses), content strategy, brand communications, digital marketing, donor communications and building relationships with journalists, influencers, and allied organisations.
