Assistant Fashion Designer — Surma

We are looking for an Assistant Fashion Designer who brings together creative instinct and technical depth—someone who can not only imagine great products but also help bring them to life, beautifully and precisely.
Role Overview
This role sits at the intersection of design, development, and execution.
You will work closely on:
Building collections that feel cohesive and emotionally resonant
Translating ideas into production-ready garments
Ensuring every piece reflects Surma’s standard of fit, finish, and simplicity
What You’ll Do
1. Design & Concept Development
Research trends, fabrics, colors, and seasonal directions
Create mood boards and concepts aligned with Surma’s aesthetic
Contribute ideas that feel:
Fresh yet familiar
Rooted in Indian sensibilities
Designed for everyday wear
2. Sketching & Technical Execution
Create detailed sketches and technical drawings
Develop precise tech packs including:
Measurements
Construction details
Fabric and trim specifications
Work closely with internal teams to translate concepts into production-ready designs
3. Fabric & Vendor Collaboration
Source fabrics and trims with a strong eye for:
Quality
Cost
Design relevance
Coordinate with pattern masters and sampling tailors
Oversee sampling, fittings, and iterations to achieve the right silhouette and finish
4. Own the Product Journey
Be involved from first idea to final garment
Ensure designs are executed accurately at every stage
Refine products through multiple iterations until they feel right
5. Trend & Market Awareness
Stay updated with global and local fashion trends
Study competitor landscape and evolving customer preferences
Translate trends into designs that are commercially relevant for Surma
6. Quality & Fit Focus
Review prototypes and final garments for:
Fit
Finish
Consistency
Maintain Surma’s standard of clean, effortless, well-made clothing
7. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
Merchandising
Marketing
Operations
Maintain clear documentation across collections, tech packs, and development stages
Who You Are
2–4 years of experience in fashion design
Strong foundation in garment construction and sampling
You Will Thrive If You:
Have a strong design sensibility with attention to detail
Can balance creativity with practicality
Enjoy being hands-on and involved in execution
Care deeply about how a garment feels, not just how it looks
Are comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment
Must-Haves
Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
Experience in creating detailed tech packs for production
Strong understanding of:
Fabrics
Patterns
Garment construction
Good time management and problem-solving ability
