About the role

The Prototype Development Toolmaker supports Product Development Engineering (PDE) by machining, modifying, and assembling high‑precision prototype components and tooling. This role requires strong interpretation of engineering drawings, sketches, and 3D models, along with hands‑on expertise in CNC and manual machining. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, safety‑conscious, self‑motivated, and capable of prioritizing work in a fast‑paced prototype environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, GD&T, and 3D CAD models to produce prototype parts and tooling
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC machining equipment to manufacture precision components
  • Perform manual machining operations using mills, lathes, and grinders
  • Operate specialty equipment including water jet and wire EDM machines
  • Manufacture and modify prototype tooling, fixtures, and components to support engineering development and testing
  • Support low volume component machining to support initial product launch
  • Inspect parts to ensure dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and compliance with design intent
  • Work closely with engineering teams to address design changes, tolerances, and manufacturability concerns
  • Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues and recommend process improvements
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs, setups, and prototype builds
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Maintain an organized, efficient, and safe work environment
  • Act as a key technical contributor to the new product development process
  • Perform other duties as directed

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Associate’s Degree in Machine Tool & Die or similar and/or Toolmaker Journeyman’s Card or certification from an established accrediting body (i.e. NIMS or equivalent).
  • 5 + years’ experience as a Toolmaker, prototype machinist, or similar role in an engineering, R&D, prototype, or manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, GD&T, and 3D CAD models
  • CNC capability: program, set up, and run CNC equipment
  • Manual machining capability using mills, lathes, and grinders
  • Experience with specialty processes/equipment including water jet and wire EDM
  • Precision measurement and inspection using common metrology tools
  • Proficient with CAM software (MasterCAM) and shop programming workflows
  • Familiarity with CAD software and the ability to use models for programming
  • Understanding of tolerance stack‑up and how critical features impact fit, function, and assembly
  • Ability to work effectively with design and product development engineers to clarify intent and iterate designs
