Applied ML Engineer โ Behavioral Intelligence | Nova / AIRA
๐ Hyderabad ยท Full-time ยท ~5 years experience
About Nova and AIRA
At Nova, we're building AIRA โ an invisible intelligence layer that sits inside tools teams already use (Slack, Teams, Gmail) and quietly detects where work is breaking down. Not through dashboards or reports, but through real-time behavioral signals: a conversation that keeps looping, a reply that's overdue, a thread where no one owns the next step.
AIRA stays silent most of the time. It nudges only when something needs attention, and escalates to a manager only when work is genuinely blocked. The goal is a product that feels like a sharp colleague quietly keeping things on track โ not a surveillance tool, not a noisy bot.
We're early, the architecture is defined, and now we're building. This role brings the intelligence to life.
What you'll own
- AIRA's signal detection pipeline โ from raw Slack/Teams events to classified behavioral signals (delay patterns, loop detection, tone risk, ownership gaps)
- The intervention threshold system โ the logic that decides when AIRA stays invisible, when it nudges, and when it escalates
- LLM-powered classification for semantic signals: intent clarity, tone analysis, decision drift, conversation summarization โ with structured outputs and confidence gating
- A two-tier inference system: lightweight real-time scoring in the background, deeper LLM inference only when a signal crosses a threshold
- Cooldown logic โ if a user ignores a nudge, AIRA backs off intelligently rather than repeating
- Evals โ a principled way to measure whether signals are accurate and whether user trust is holding
What we're looking for
Around 5 years of experience shipping ML or AI features that real users interact with โ not just internal tooling or research pipelines.
Hard skills: NLP fundamentals (intent classification, semantic similarity, tone detection), practical LLM experience (structured outputs, function calling, reliability at scale), behavioral ML (time-series patterns, anomaly detection, baseline calibration), real-time pipeline engineering, Slack/Teams API experience is a strong plus.
Beyond skills, we're looking for specific instincts: you understand that detecting a signal and acting on it are two separate decisions. You build the off-switch before you build the feature. You feel uncomfortable when a product is too loud. You think in feedback loops โ a bad nudge doesn't just annoy a user, it degrades the system's signal over time.
How we work
We lead with execution, not meetings. Our default is async โ decisions happen in documents and threads. We give engineers real ownership over architecture and direction. We build for trust, not engagement. We'd rather cut a feature than ship one that erodes user confidence.
One principle we hold hard: just because you can detect something doesn't mean you should act on it. We build systems that know the difference โ and so should the people building them.
To apply
Send us something that shows how you think โ a write-up of a hard ML/AI problem you've solved, a system you've designed, or a decision you've made about restraint in a product. We read everything carefully. Send us an email to hiring@novacommunicate.com
We're not screening for the most impressive resume. We're looking for someone who will feel genuinely uncomfortable the first time AIRA fires a nudge it shouldn't โ and will stay up thinking about how to fix it.
What we offer
We're closing our angel round shortly โ and this is the moment to get in early.
Competitive salary with meaningful ESOP options, so you're not just building the product, you're building your stake in it. More importantly, you'll be one of the first engineers on a problem that hasn't been solved before, with real ownership over how the system thinks and behaves.
This is not a role for everyone. If you're optimizing for stability, a large team, or a predictable roadmap โ this isn't the right fit, and that's okay. But if you're a builder who gets energized by ambiguity, who wants to see their decisions matter from day one, and who'd rather have equity in something meaningful than a high salary at something safe โ we'd love to talk.
