About The Position
The API Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining backend services and application programming interfaces (APIs) that support RMF business and engineering applications. The role focuses on building secure, reliable, and maintainable backend solutions using Microsoft Azure, .NET, and Python within homegrown web applications. This position works closely with cross-functional teams including product owners, front-end developers, data engineers, and domain specialists to implement well-defined requirements and deliver scalable solutions. The role operates within established enterprise standards, tooling, and deployment pipelines, applies sound object-oriented design principles, and contributes to continuous improvement of system performance, reliability, and code quality. The role also leverages Generative AI (GenAI)–enabled engineering practices to improve development efficiency and solution quality.
Key Responsibilities
Software & Backend API Engineering
- Design, develop, test, and support backend services and RESTful APIs in a production environment.
- Develop internal APIs using C#, .NET, and Python, including OpenAPI / Swagger documentation.
- Apply SOLID principles and established design patterns to create loosely coupled, maintainable, and extensible solutions.
- Apply sound API design principles including data validation, error handling, and versioning.
- Write maintainable, readable, and testable code following modern software engineering best practices.
- Implement and maintain unit tests to ensure code quality, reliability, and regression prevention.
- Apply core software engineering concepts such as object-oriented design, asynchronous processing, threading, source control, and structured debugging.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of Angular and Blazor to support UI integration and troubleshooting (secondary skill).
Cloud & Data Engineering
- Develop and operate applications within an enterprise Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
- Implement solutions using Azure services such as Azure Functions, Azure App Services, and Azure Redis.
- Work with multiple data storage models including Document databases, Azure Storage Accounts, and SQL databases.
- Support application performance, reliability, and scalability through efficient backend and system design.
- Monitor, log, and troubleshoot application behavior in a cloud environment.
- Demonstrate familiarity with containerization concepts.
Generative AI (GenAI) & Modern Engineering Practices
- Use enterprise-approved Generative AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to assist with code generation, refactoring, documentation, and unit test creation.
- Apply human-in-the-loop judgment to ensure AI-assisted outputs adhere to Chevron standards for security, reliability, maintainability, and compliance.
- Continuously evaluate and responsibly adopt emerging GenAI capabilities within enterprise guardrails.
Enterprise Tools & Standards
- Work within Chevron-built tools such as Orion, Azure DevOps Pipelines (formerly Pipeline Framework), ACME, NextPage, and Status.
- Use commonly adopted tools including GHAZDO, DAST, GitHub Copilot (intermediate level), Visual Studio Code, and ServiceNow (SNOW).
- Ensure solutions align with Chevron engineering standards including CDAS and cvxcontrols.
Differentiating & Desired Skills
- Experience with Python frameworks and packages such as FastAPI, Pydantic, Pytest, Pandas, or Polars.
- Basic knowledge of statistics as applied to engineering or analytical workflows.
- Familiarity with common backend and enterprise application design patterns (e.g., repository, factory, strategy).
