About the role
Senior Software Engineer (Backend) — Digital Platform & Engineering
Location: Noida (work from office, 5 days a week)
Experience: 5-7 years, including at least 3 years at internet product companies
Team: Digital Platform & Engineering (DPE)
Reporting To: Engineering Manager, DPE
Who we are
Over the past 17 years, Medanta has created an unrivalled impact in delivering world-class multi-specialty care for patients in India.
We have hospitals in Gurgaon, Noida, Lucknow, Patna, Indore and Ranchi. In addition, we have clinics in Defence Colony (South
Delhi), Cyber City & Subhash Chowk (Gurgaon), and at the Delhi Airport. Medanta continues to expand its healthcare ecosystem
through diagnostics, pharmacies, homecare services and digital health initiatives.
Digital Platform & Engineering (DPE) is Medanta's newly built product and technology organization. Modelled on India's leading
internet companies, DPE brings together product managers, designers and engineers to build the products and platforms that power
patient journeys, clinical care and hospital operations across the Medanta network. We work from our own office in Noida, with
strong sponsorship from the CEO and the stability of a profitable, publicly listed healthcare group.
Role Overview
We are looking for Software Engineers who have built and shipped products at internet product companies and are ready to own
significant pieces of a new healthcare technology platform. Software Engineers are the core builders in DPE: you will take features
and services from design to production, make sound engineering decisions, and help Associate Software Engineers grow.
You will join a small, flat team at an early stage, where the systems you design will become the foundations others build on. We move
with the pace of a startup, but in healthcare quality is non-negotiable — the software you build will be used by doctors, nurses and
patients at the point of care.
What You Will Work On
Seamless patient journeys — the services behind finding the right doctor, booking a visit, diagnostics, payments, discharge
and follow-up across OPD, IPD, emergency and day care.
Products that empower clinicians and caregivers — technology that assists doctors, nurses and care teams managing heavy
patient loads.
Platform-first foundations — reusable services such as payments, care subscriptions, scheduling and a unified patient record,
designed once and used by every product across the network.
Voice-first, touch-first and AI-first experiences — backends for products where people speak instead of type, tap instead of
filling forms, and are assisted by AI at every step.
A Hospital Information System built from scratch — the core clinical platform, including EMR, that runs every hospital
workflow, 24×7.
Intelligence and interoperability — AI-powered services, healthcare data platforms, and integrations with national digital
health standards such as ABDM and FHIR.
Key Responsibilities
Own the design and delivery of backend services, APIs and microservices end to end — from design and development through
deployment, monitoring and iteration.
Participate in on-call rotations for the systems you build.
Design scalable, reliable and secure systems: data models, API contracts, caching strategies, and asynchronous, event-driven
workflows.
Write design documents, make well-reasoned technical decisions, and defend them with clear trade-offs; constructively
challenge proposed solutions, including those from senior engineers and leadership.
Build to a healthcare quality bar, with strong automated testing, security and data-privacy practices — audit trails, role-based
access control and encryption of sensitive data, in line with regulations such as the DPDP Act.
Review code and help raise engineering standards across the team.
Mentor and unblock Associate Software Engineers through pairing, design discussions and reviews.
Partner with product managers, designers and clinical and operations teams to translate real-world workflows into technical
solutions, including occasional visits to our hospitals, and explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Instrument services with logging, metrics and alerting, and use them to diagnose issues, troubleshoot production problems,
and optimize performance and reliability.
Use AI coding assistants and agents across the development lifecycle — design, coding, testing and debugging — while owning
every line you ship, whether you or an AI wrote it, and following strict guardrails so patient information is never exposed to
unapproved AI tools.
Help shape the team's AI-assisted engineering practices — shared agent configurations, project context and rules files,
guardrails and review standards.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Must have
5-7 years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years at internet product companies (e.g., consumer
internet, e-commerce, fintech, marketplaces or classifieds).
Experience taking at least one product or major feature through the full development lifecycle — design, build, launch and
operation at scale.
Strong programming skills in Java or Python, with experience in frameworks such as Spring Boot or FastAPI.
Proficiency in AI-assisted development: using coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to plan, implement,
test and refactor — and knowing when not to trust their output.
Strong problem solving and data structures and algorithms fundamentals.
Solid low-level design skills: object-oriented design, design patterns, class design and clean API contracts.
System design ability: explain and defend the architecture of systems you have built, and design new systems from scratch
with clear reasoning on scalability, availability and consistency trade-offs.
Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), caching (Redis), and
messaging or streaming systems (Kafka or similar).
Strong communication skills, with the confidence to engage senior stakeholders, including clinicians.
High ownership, comfort with ambiguity, and a hustler's energy to build from the ground up — without compromising on
quality.
A product mindset — curiosity about how hospitals work, and care for the outcome for the user, not just the ticket.
Depth over frequent switches — we value engineers who have stayed long enough in their roles to see their work through.
Good to have
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows.
Experience with cloud platforms (preferably AWS), and comfort working across cloud and on-premise environments.
Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production systems.
Experience building agents or automations for engineering workflows — e.g., test generation, code review, migrations or
documentation — using agent frameworks or tool integrations (such as MCP).
Experience integrating with third-party systems — payment gateways, ERPs, messaging platforms, or device and equipment
interfaces.
Exposure to healthcare, fintech or other regulated domains, or to interoperability standards such as HL7/FHIR.
Experience mentoring junior engineers.
Exposure to frontend development (React).
Education
B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science, IT or a related field; a top-tier institution (IITs, IIITs, NITs, BITS or equivalent) is preferred.
Interview Process
Problem solving and coding — solve a data structures and algorithms problem and write working code.
Low-level design — class design, API contracts and data models for a given problem.
System design and project deep dive — walk us through the architecture of your current project, the decisions behind it and
how you use AI in your development workflow, then design a new system from scratch.
Candidates in Delhi NCR complete all rounds in person at our Noida office, usually in a single day. For candidates based elsewhere,
early rounds may be held over video, with the final round(s) in person. Every candidate visits our office before an offer is made.
