Description

Position Summary

The Scenic Builder is responsible for the hands-on construction, modification, repair, and maintenance of haunted attraction sets and scenic structures. This role supports the execution of approved designs by building safely, accurately, and consistently to established construction standards.

 

The role is intentionally focused on building, maintaining, and stabilizing infrastructure in order to support reliable execution and enable leadership to operate effectively at the strategic level.

 

This position must have a flexible schedule, including availability for nights and weekends, to accommodate the unique demands of our event-driven environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: 

 

Construction & Build Execution
•    Construct walls, facades, scenic elements, and support structures using wood and other related materials.
•    Read and execute builds according to approved blueprints, drawings, digital drafts, fabrication drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions.
•    Perform accurate measuring, cutting, fastening, and assembly to minimize rework and material waste.
•    Adapt builds as needed while maintaining safety, durability, and design intent.
•    Complete assigned tasks independently or as part of a build team with minimal supervision.

 

Maintenance & Repairs
•    Assist with in-season maintenance and repairs to keep sets operational and safe.
•    Identify weak points or wear issues and report them to the Show Director.
•    Perform reinforcements, replacements, or adjustments as directed.
•    Respond effectively to time-sensitive fixes without compromising safety standards.

 

Safety & Worksite Standards
•    Follow all safety guidelines, PPE requirements, and tool-use protocols.
•    Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas.
•    Use ladders, power tools, and equipment properly and responsibly.
•    Support documentation standards related to structural safety and build consistency.Tools, Materials & Organization
•    Properly use and care for hand tools and power tools.
•    Assist with organizing materials, fasteners, adhesives, and consumables.
•    Notify leadership of damaged tools, low supplies, or unsafe conditions.
•    Help maintain shop and build areas to support efficient workflows.

 

Team Collaboration
•    Work cooperatively with Management Team, other builders, designers, and production staff.
•    Accept direction, prioritize assigned tasks, and meet build deadlines.
•    Share knowledge and techniques to support consistency and reduce single-person dependency.
•    Maintain a professional, positive attitude during high-pressure build periods.

 

Seasonal / Show Support (As Applicable)
•    Assist with load-in, load-out, and teardown.
•    Execute quick pivots or adjustments as show or Company needs change.
•    Support overnight, weekend, or extended-hour shifts during peak production periods.
•    Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

·   High school diploma or equivalent required.

·   2-3 years of experience in construction, fabrication, scenic building, or a closely related field required.

·   Strong working knowledge of tools, materials, and construction methods, including safe use of hand and power tools.

·   Ability to work independently for extended periods with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

·   Proven problem-solving skills, including the ability to assess issues and implement effective solutions under time pressure.

·   Strong safety awareness and risk assessment ability, with commitment to safe work practices, proper PPE use, and hazard identification.

·   Physical capability to safely perform construction work, including lifting materials, climbing ladders, working indoors and outdoors, and performing repetitive manual tasks.

·   Ability to follow established build standards, documentation, and safety procedures.

·   Willingness and availability to work flexible schedules, including nights and weekends, as required by production demands.

·   Ability to work in both quiet shop settings and busy production environments with large crowds.

·   Flexibility to work non-standard hours, including nights and weekends, to meet the needs of the seasonal attraction.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
