Material Scientist Full Time Role (Japan)

Full Time Role

Target start date: By 1st November 2025 Application

Deadline: 15th September 2025

[1] Who we are

Hello, we are Amphico: a London and Tokyo based company with a growing transdisciplinary and diverse team of 15+ people composed of scientists, designers, engineers and business operators brought together by a shared commitment to transforming the textile industry. Our mission is to lead the textile industry to a pollution-free and circular future by developing and commercialising toxic-free high-performance, sustainable alternatives to conventional textile technologies.

Our lead products include:

Amphitex: a circular and PFAS-free waterproof and breathable textile for outdoor and performance apparel.

Amphicolor: a waterless coloured textile which dramatically reduces the carbon footprint, water-consumption and pollution attributed to textile colouration.

For both of our technologies, we leverage cutting edge material science, automation and AI to transform the way textiles are developed and produced. More information about us can be found on our website: www.amphico.uk

[2] Responsibilities

At AMPHICO JAPAN, we are looking for a Material Scientist with expertise in polymer science and yarn development to support the advancement of our Amphicolor and Amphitex technologies. The role will focus on improving yarn performance, enhancing colour consistency, and providing QA/QC support across our Tokyo lab and manufacturing partners in Japan and Taiwan.

Key responsibilities include:

Yarn Development: Design, develop, and optimise synthetic yarns suitable for Amphicolor and Amphitex applications, with emphasis on polymer selection, extrusion, and processing.

Polymer Science: Apply expertise in polymer chemistry and material science to improve yarn performance, colour fastness, and stability during production.

Colour Consistency: Conduct experiments to understand colour behaviour in polymer-based yarns and develop processes to minimise variability.

QA/QC: Establish and implement QA/QC protocols for materials developed in the Tokyo lab, ensuring reproducibility and adherence to performance specifications.

Factory Support: Conduct regular visits to partner factories in Japan and Taiwan to oversee manufacturing trials, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth scale-up.

Collaboration: Work closely with ML team, and Textile Engineers to integrate material insights into end-to-end development workflows.

Documentation & Reporting: Maintain thorough documentation of experiments, protocols, and QA/QC results. Contribute to technical reports and grant deliverables.

[3] Qualifications and Requirements Education:

• Master’s or PhD in Polymer Science, Material Science, Textile Engineering, or a related field,

or • Equivalent relevant work experience.

Experience:

Mandatory:

◦ Strong background in polymer science and synthetic material development.

◦ Proven track record of conducting QA/QC in a lab or industrial setting.

Business-level or higher English proficiency (spoken and written) to collaborate with global R&D teams and partners.

Business-level or higher Japanese proficiency (spoken and written) to coordinate with mills, suppliers, and manufacturing partners in Japan.

Preferred:

◦ Experience with polymer processing techniques (extrusion, spinning, compounding).

◦ Experience with textile colouration processes and colour consistency challenges in polymer-based yarns.

◦ Experience working with international manufacturing partners, ideally in Japan or Taiwan. ◦ Familiarity with textile performance testing standards (JIS, ISO, ASTM).

◦ Ability to bridge material science with practical textile manufacturing requirements.

Location:

• Applicants must be based in or willing to relocate to Tokyo.

Visa and Right to Work in Japan:

• 20 days’ paid leave per year (excluding national holidays).

• Working in-person required but hours are flexible.

• Access to collaborative prototyping, textile testing, and colour measurement facilities in Tokyo.

• Opportunity to work on pioneering materials that will redefine sustainable textiles.

• A dynamic and innovative working environment at the intersection of polymer science, textile engineering, and AI-driven colour prediction.

• Business trip opportunity to the UK and Europe working with our UK based team.

[5] To apply

To apply, please submit your CV, a cover letter detailing your textile design and engineering experience (with a focus on weaving and work with mills), and examples of past projects. Please make sure to submit by the stated deadline (you can find it at the beginning of this form).
