The American Heart Association's Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. Under close supervision and mentorship of experienced public health professionals, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems. Throughout this process, students will develop and strengthen health communication and community engagement skills. Students will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in communities by supporting nutrition security work, health education strategies, and creating culturally competent resources that can be utilized by communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke. Internship Overview: Time Commitment: Internship Duration: 9/8/25-12/5/25 Location: Hybrid Position - Intern must be based in Nashville, TN or the immediate surrounding area. Salary: $23 per hour Internship Outcomes: Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to: Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment. Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others. Responsibilities Assist in organizing/implementing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives and programs throughout communities. Support work around community impact priority issues, including hypertension control, nutrition insecurity, community response, and tobacco/vaping. Engage rural healthcare centers. Assist with internal program evaluations. Assist the community impact team in communicating the impact of local work. Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance via research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online or offline sharing. Create and manage a volunteer database and communications; respond to volunteer inquiries with upcoming opportunities. Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs such as playbooks and other tools. Explore state or local organizations that align with the Association's priority issue areas and identify opportunities for collaboration. Assist with the planning and implementation of trainings and other community impact meetings. Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary. Qualifications Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, community health, advocacy or other related degree program. Willingness to travel to and from local community events and local meetings. Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills. Ability to learn quickly and have focused attention to detail. Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and basic knowledge of Canva. Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi connection and reliable transportation. Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 9am-5pm. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
