Supervises the work of employees charged with the transportation of materials, products, and components from one area to another. This includes moving, weighing and unloading of railcars and trucks of raw materials to production departments. Spots and sets out rail car for shipment of finished products. Works with all departments so they can be cost effective. Makes recommendations to department heads on discipline and reprimands. Makes sure personnel are assigned to proper jobs. Maintains daily records on personnel, materials and equipment. Makes sure personnel have good safety habits and conducts safety meetings as scheduled. Develops and motivates personnel on job performance. Monitors and schedules removal and disposal of sediment from ponds and canals.
- Promotes a culture of safety among employees. Enforces and adheres to all safety rules and policies.
- Coordinates with other departments and General Yards office personnel to make sure proper railcars are spotted for loading and unloading.
- Schedules and assigns personnel to appropriate crews and jobs. Monitors and reviews personnel daily to ensure they are performing well in their job.
- Monitors all equipment in unit to provide safe and productive operation of equipment.
- Maintains good record keeping system on equipment records, daily checklist, monthly inventory of materials, personnel records, safety meetings, etc.
- Coordinates work of unit with other units in General Yards and other departments at AMERICAN.
- Monitors and assists in training of new personnel on jobs.
- Oversees the operation of the Compactor.
- Monitors operations of removal and disposal of cement and pond sediment.
- Actively participates on project teams and continuous improvement teams. Leads these efforts as needed.
- Keeps shop supplied with sand and other materials. Supervises the unloading of materials as they come in on trucks and rail cars.
- Monitors cleaning of shop refuse and other unwanted materials. Supervises crew using loaders and dump trucks to ensure that all shop refuse bins are cleaned. Supervises the preparation of the cupola slag bin for draining each week and the cleaning out when cool as well as supervising the preparation under the cupola for dropping, then ensures clean-up as soon as it cools. Supervises the dumping of dempster boxes. Assists environmental personnel to dispose of paints and other materials as required. Ensures that plant landfills are pushed off.
- Assists switching crews at night on derailments as needed. Works with outside contractors to coordinate the track repairs and new track installation during summer shutdown.
- Monitors heavy equipment construction projects. Prepares new building sites by compacting material to specification and required elevation. Also responsible for building and maintaining all plant roads. Builds and repairs pipe storage yards for the Shipping and Steel Pipe Departments using loaders, trucks, road patrol, (compactor, drum packer-rented) and grades to proper elevation.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Maintains and enforces an effective unit safety program. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must meet the physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by the Company.
- Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing is required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
- Exhibit operations experience serving in managerial/supervisory role(s) for a manufacturing entity or managerial/supervisory experience within the United States Armed Forces.
- Must have a thorough working knowledge of all operations in the General Yards Department.
- Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with others.
- Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
- Must exhibit the ability to read and write legibly.
- Must be familiar with all materials handled by the General Yards Department and their location within the plant.
- Must exhibit the ability to perform basic math.
- Must exhibit a working knowledge of the computer.
- Must exhibit a record of less than 2.5 attendance points.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Exhibit the ability to read blueprints.
- Exhibit one year of experience switching railcars.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
- Sitting required while operating mobile equipment, driving from job to job, performing paper work, etc.
- Standing and walking on various surfaces that may not be level such as gravel, dirt, concrete, and asphalt is required while performing track work, handling materials, switching, etc.
- Climbing stairs is required at bottom of silo, General Yards office and other offices within the shop, steps to car, etc.
- Climbing ladder to access railcars, silos, sand hoppers, bins, and mobile equipment is required.
- Balancing is required while occasionally riding on railcars and while climbing on ladders.
- Stooping is required to perform track work such as setting spike, use railroad jack with bar, to move rail, etc. Stooping is also required to inspect work and equipment.
- Kneeling is required to replace bolts in track, set spike, inspect equipment and work, etc.
- Crouching is required to replace bearings on cars, replace cut levers, inspect equipment and work, etc.
- Crawling is required to get underneath railcars for maintenance.
- Overhead reach required to replace grab irons, perform maintenance on railcars, climb on rail cars, climb ladders, etc.
- Forward reach is required to operate mobile equipment, perform office work, obtain tools from track truck, ride on railcars, etc.
- Bended reach is essential to pick up tools, shovel sand, open hopper doors, perform track work, inspect equipment, etc.
- Handling is constantly required to operate mobile equipment, ride on railcars, and to handle spike hammer, shovel, wrenches, picks bars, spikes, air hammers, air and hydraulic tappers, tie tongs, etc.
- Use of fingers required for paper work, nuts and bolts, replacing clips on track, replacing connecting rods, operating silo controls, stick welder, operating mobile equipment, etc.
- Feeling required to check bolt holes on track.
- Talking is essential for communicating with subordinates, supervision, and other departments.
- Vision is required for safety, quality, and operating mobile equipment.
- Hearing required for communication and safety.
- Lifting and carrying is required up to 75 lbs maximum with assistance; air hammer (75lbs), railroad jacks (46 lbs), spike bar (29 lbs), lining bar (24 lbs), wrench (20-22 lbs), acetylene (50 lbs with assistance), hammer (9 lbs), railroad ties (150 lbs with assistance). Also required to lift various sacked materials.
- Pushing and pulling ties and rails, spikes, wrenches, and bolts with up to 75 lbs force is required. Also required for levers while operating mobile equipment. ** This is a working Foreman position. This person will also perform the responsibilities of the people he supervises.
