Supervises all activities in the Melting Department. Operates all melting equipment in a safe and productive manner. Understands all melting processes utilized in the manufacturing process. Efficiently utilizes resources to maximize productivity and minimize manufacturing costs. Conducts training as necessary to meet changes in production schedules. Maintains a safe working environment. Administers and enforces all Company rules and policies in a fair, consistent, and equitable manner. Supervises employees in accordance with AMERICAN policies and procedures.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promotes a culture of safety and environmental compliance among employees. Enforces and adheres to all safety rules and policies.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision. Cross trains on all jobs within the line of progression.
- Conducts and participates in safety meetings and safety inspections.
- Understands the departmental line of progression in order to quickly move personnel around to other jobs with necessary.
- Ensures operating procedures are available, stored in the correct place, and up-to-date for all jobs.
- Knows all equipment in their unit relating to its effective, efficient, and safe use.
- Knows all raw materials used in manufacturing processes. Understands the chemical analysis, physical properties, etc.
- Works with others to accomplish common goals.
- Ensures departmental divisional goals and standards are met.
- Cross-trains to fill in for other General Foreman and Production Leads.
- Manages personnel and makes decisions in a manner consistent with the Company's Equal Employment Opportunity Policy and Supervisory Training Policy.
- Enters repair requests into computer for repair of equipment.
- Enters (2) two-week schedule prior to the beginning of the work week; manages time, attendance and vacation for all personnel working under their supervision.
- Adheres, supports, and strictly follows Company, quality, and environmental standards and directives while performing job duties for the protection of themselves and others.
UNITS 0020 AND 0025 RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knows all procedures for operating cupola, including starting controls, burning coke bed in, charging, tapping, normal operation, draining, banking, and dropping bottom.
- Understands the process of iron flow from cupola to Ductile Iron Pipe shops.
- Periodically inspects charge materials used to ensure that the correct materials are used and that the materials meet the required specifications.
- Calculates charge mixes and how to implement a charge mix in order to ensure that the iron chemistry remains within specifications and that the least cost charge is being used.
- Understands refractories used in cupola, troughs, ladles, and induction furnaces and knows how to properly install them.
- Knows how desulfurizing systems operate. Reviews carbide usage and final sulfurs, and makes appropriate adjustments to minimize carbide usage.
- Knows how the mixer-holding furnaces operate, including pouring iron in and out of furnaces, keeping up with iron levels, operating inductors, and operating water-cooling system. Periodically reviews all plans for supplying emergency water to inductors in the event that the normal cooling water is lost.
- Understands the induction furnaces and operates them when needed. Installs, and patches refractory linings when needed. Understands how to coordinate the iron flow through the furnaces and to the shops.
- Operates the pressure ladles when needed and is familiar with the problems that can occur during their operation. Periodically checks the magnesium level percentage in the treated iron to ensure that the iron is being treated properly. Makes adjustments in the treating process as required.
- Works with DIP supervision and personnel to coordinate the flow of iron to the shops in the most efficient manner while keeping the shops constantly supplied with iron.
- Organizes work crews to complete special tasks which arise in the quickest and most efficient manner.
- Oversees and ensures the proper installation and curing of all refractory materials within the Melting Department.
UNIT 0730 RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates movement of revert material with outside processors. Calls outside vendors for them to pick up revert.
- Performs sampling when needed by using handled X-ray fluorescence (XRF) device or cutting samples from purchased scrap with torch, carrying sample to the lab, and retrieving results. Meets with outside vendors to check bad scrap.
- Ensures every truck load of scrap materials is visually inspected, receives a rate/grade and that the scale ticket is signed. Rejects material if it does not meet standards.
- Assembles and compiles data concerning scrap metal needs and logistics to determine what materials are needed. Determines and coordinates manpower and equipment necessary for the movement of materials to meet production needs. Anticipates daily needs of and makes necessary adjustments to ensure production demands are met. Schedules scrap and ensures what is needed is available.
- Works with the switching yard and makes work assignments.
- Assists Material Cost Analyst in taking spare parts and operating supplies inventories. Understands how spare parts and operating supplies are ordered, and orders any parts or supplies needed. Utilizes computer terminal and Scrap Dragon system as required.
- Instructs locomotive crane operators on what materials to load in order to ensure there is enough material for the next day's production. Ensures railroad cars are unloaded in a timely fashion to minimize demurrage cost.
- Performs clerical duties for the unit. Keeps up with the employee's vacation time, absenteeism, discipline points, etc. Records and reports employees' time. Prepares monthly reports, such as the fire extinguisher report, chain report, attendance report, production report, etc.
- Attends various meetings, such as safety meetings, supervision meetings, etc.
- Fills in for the General Foreman when needed.
- Works closely with Maintenance and Electrical employees to coordinate scheduled downtimes to perform more extensive maintenance and repair work.
- Orders trucks to ship nonferrous by-product materials to vendors who are purchasing these materials.
- Ensures the water injection system is working properly and that all filters and spray nozzles are cleaned and inspected regularly. Changes spray nozzles regularly on wetting system to ensure that the system is working properly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must exhibit a minimum of one year of prior work experience serving in a managerial/supervisory role(s) for a manufacturing entity. OR Must exhibit a minimum of one year of prior managerial/supervisory experience within the United States Armed Forces.
- Must exhibit the ability to read and interpret basic specifications for projects, such as technical drawings, product codes, etc.
- Must exhibit the ability to learn technical information, such as American Water Works Association (AWWA) and AMERICAN materials specifications for chemical and mechanical properties.
- Must exhibit a thorough knowledge of AMERICAN manufacturing processes and products, or similar processes and products.
- Must exhibit the ability to use measuring instruments, such as measuring tapes, level, plumb-bob, temperature recorders, thermocouples, pyrometer, electrical and mechanical gauges, etc.
- Must exhibit good management and leadership skills.
- Must exhibit good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with persons of different socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with other individuals and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must exhibit good oral and written communication skills with all levels of the Company (i.e., good command of grammar and spelling). Must exhibit the ability to communicate in a courteous, polite, and effective manner, both verbally and in written format.
- Must exhibit good attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Must exhibit a tolerance for stress, the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines under a dynamic work schedule. The nature of this position requires performing job duties with numerous interruptions.

PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Exhibit prior experience as a Sample Technician Melting, Melter "A", or Production Lead Melting with a general knowledge of the melting process, materials, and equipment used.
- Exhibit a working knowledge of all operations, materials, and equipment used in the area of responsibility.
- Exhibit a general understanding of all AMERICAN policies and procedures.
- Exhibit a working knowledge of melting, scrap processing, and refractory processes, materials, and equipment.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sitting required when at desk preparing reports, on telephone, on mobile equipment, driving, etc.
- Standing required on various surfaces while instructing employees, checking equipment, etc.
- Walking required on various even and uneven surfaces to check on employees, within the shop, while inspecting machines, etc.

- Climbing fixed ladder may be required to get to some equipment and in other areas of the shop, etc.
- Balancing required while on ladder. Balancing required to maneuver to and within various work areas throughout the plant.
- Stooping, kneeling, and crouching required to check equipment, products, etc.
- Overhead reach required to climb ladders, reach equipment controls, reach high shelves, etc.
- Forward reach required to perform desk activities, operate equipment, operate mobile equipment, etc.

- Handling required for various hand tools, telephone, measuring devices, etc.
- Use of fingers required while writing, using typing, using phone, etc.
- Feeling required to check texture of products.
