SERVICE WORKER MELTING
- Fills in on various jobs in any Melting Department. Keeps scrap processing area clean and orderly. Assists in metal sampling and maintains supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
- Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing is required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
- Must meet the physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by the Company.
- Must be willing and able to work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as required to fulfill job duties.
- Must possess a valid state issued driver's license.
- Must exhibit the ability to learn.
- Must be able to read and write legibly. Must exhibit the ability to communicate in a courteous, polite, and effective manner, both verbally and in written format.
Essential Physical Functions
- Sitting occasionally required to operate mobile equipment, such as the pickup truck, fork truck, Skid Steer, etc.
- Standing required for long periods on uneven surfaces that may be covered with debris, such as sand, scrap, dirt, and gravel; to skim ladles, rod the tap hole, add raw materials to iron, shovel, clean, hook/unhook materials from crane, patch and line ladles, wait for samples, watch customers unload materials, etc.
- Walking required for long periods on uneven surfaces that may be covered with debris, such as sand, scrap, dirt, and gravel, to move around within work area. Walking required to weigh and throw raw materials into iron, gather supplies, move around on Cupola platform and treating stations, add raw materials to iron, shovel, clean, hook/unhook materials from crane, etc. Walking also required to access various work areas to fill in for various units within the Melting Department.
- Climbing stairs (up to 21 steps) required to access appropriate workstation, such as the skimming station, treating stations, Cupola area, and other areas of the Melting Department.
- Climbing fixed ladder required to access appropriate workstation (up to 17 rungs on average 4 times a day entering the #1 and #2 Treating Station).
- Balancing required on stairs, ladders, and railroad cars. Balancing also required to maneuver throughout plant and work area.
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bended reach required to perform a variety of job duties, such as shoveling, cleaning, skimming, sweeping, mopping, lining ladles, patching ladles, adding materials to iron, picking up refractory material in boxes, picking up trash and scrap metal, etc.
- Crawling required to clean ductwork.
- Overhead reach required to skim, rod the tap hole, patch and line ladles, chip out chamber, climb railroad car, ride on railroad car, climb ladders, operate crane controls, etc.
- Forward reach required to line and patch ladles, chip out chamber at treating station, shovel, sweep, skim slag off of iron, clean offices, etc.
- Handling constantly required to weigh materials, skim slag off iron, sweep, shovel, mop, chip ladles, patch ladles, line ladles, move bags of refractory material, move buckets of raw material, operate torch, pick up trash, use fire hose, etc.
- Use of fingers required to operate hoist controls, two-way radios, write on sample bags, and complete reports (e.g., sample report).
- Talking required for person-to-person communication.
- Vision required for safety due to hot ladles, molten iron traveling via overhead crane, movement of mobile equipment (railroad cars, locomotive engines, and cranes), etc. Vision also required to line and patch ladles, skim slag off hot iron, weigh up raw materials, properly add raw materials to iron, pick up scrap, etc.
- Hearing required for safety due to hot ladles, molten iron traveling via overhead crane, movement of mobile equipment (railroad cars, locomotive engines, and cranes), etc. Hearing also required to listen for sirens on crane and other warning devices, and for person-to-person communication.
- Lifting and/or carrying required for the following: chip bar (15 pounds), wood skim stick (12 pounds), temperature lance (15 pounds), shovel of sand (average 20 pounds), chipping hammer (20 pounds), torch (22 pounds to 35 pounds), boxes/bags of refractory material (55 pounds), sample spoon, fire extinguisher (40 pounds), shovel load of material, mop bucket, etc. Lifting and carrying also required for bags of raw materials (50 pounds), alloys, etc. Lifting required from floor to waist. Carrying required up to 100 feet.
- Pushing and pulling required for a wheelbarrow with approximately 80 pounds of sand. Pushing and pulling also required to move 50-pound bags of raw material, rod the Cupola tap hole with 20-foot 85-pound steel bar with 108 pounds of force approximately once per hour to maintain tap hole in open condition, shovel sand, etc. Pushing and pulling also required to operate fire hose, pull portable torch, 70-pound chain, 40- to 50-pound empty drums, etc. *Works in areas where it is very hot, dirty, and exposed to smoke and fumes.*
