JOB DESCRIPTION
BASIC FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for leading packaging development for plumbing products within Kohler Kitchen & Bath, managing the process from the initial concept through full implementation. Key responsibilities include defining packaging requirements, developing specifications, partnering with manufacturing and supply chain teams, and ensuring on‑time project delivery. We are seeking highly motivated and well‑organized individuals with capabilities in materials engineering, product compliance and regulatory requirements, and financial business acumen. The ideal candidate is a proactive self‑starter who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, can effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, and demonstrates strong written and verbal communication abilities
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as the Packaging Engineering subject-matter expert, delivering industry-leading packaging designs, standards, and specifications.
- Lead packaging development activities for new product launches and value engineering projects, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of all commitments.
- Own the end-to-end packaging development process—from concept creation and prototype evaluation to final validation and launch readiness.
- Develop innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable protective packaging solutions supporting both new product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong understanding of product compliance standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring products meet applicable safety, environmental, and industry-specific regulations across global markets.
- Ability to evaluate cost implications, support value engineering initiatives, and make data-driven business decisions that balance quality, compliance, and profitability objectives.
- Demonstrated capability in material selection, performance evaluation, and engineering solutions to optimize product quality, durability, manufacturability, and sustainability requirements.
- Collaborate closely with packaging material suppliers and external partners to explore design alternatives, optimize materials, and drive innovation.
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of packaging solutions, assessing total cost impact including materials, logistics, capital investments, and labor.
- Lead the creation of detailed distribution maps, packaging test protocols, qualification plans, and technical specifications for key projects.
- Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, operations, and supply chain teams to ensure seamless integration and implementation of packaging solutions.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives focused on enhancing quality, reducing costs, improving supply chain efficiency, and minimizing product damage.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior team members to support capability development.
- Cultivate a collaborative, positive, and high-performing team environment.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of domestic and international packaging, handling, and transportation regulations to ensure compliance.
- Conduct research, support investigations, and maintain corporate packaging engineering documentation, standards, and best practices.
RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTACTS:
Supervisory Relationships
- This position reports to the Deputy Manager – Engineering, Packaging.
Organizational Relationships
- Works collaboratively with teams across Engineering, Marketing, Manufacturing, Industrial Design, Purchasing, Quality, and Supply Chain functions.
External Business Relationships
- Interfaces with customers, Dealers, packaging suppliers and consultants to support packaging development and execution activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering or a related technical discipline required.
- 8–12 years of experience in industrial and/or retail packaging design.
- Proven proficiency in project management, with the ability to drive multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Hands-on experience with protective packaging design and materials.
- Prior exposure to manufacturing environments and warehouse/distribution center operations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
- Excellent analytical abilities and strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Understanding of software’s used for packaging design like ArtiosCAD, CAPE Pack, Creo, Adobe Illustrator
- Solid understanding of packaging transit testing standards and methodologies.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
