Role Description – Alt Text Editor (Chemistry, Life Science, Engineering)Continual Engine is seeking Alt Text Editors with strong expertise in Chemistry, particularly Organic Chemistry, to create and review high-quality alternative text for scientific illustrations and educational content. This role primarily focuses on accurately describing organic chemistry structures, reaction mechanisms, molecular diagrams, stereochemistry, spectroscopy figures, laboratory illustrations, and other chemistry visuals for higher education textbooks and digital learning materials.
In addition to chemistry, experience with Life Sciences (biology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry) and Engineering diagrams is highly desirable. The Alt Text Editor will work closely with accessibility specialists, quality teams, and AI-assisted authoring tools to ensure all descriptions are technically accurate, concise, contextually appropriate, and compliant with accessibility standards.
This is a full-time remote position requiring strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex scientific illustrations and communicate them effectively for users of assistive technologies.
Qualifications- Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, with strong preference for candidates specializing in Organic Chemistry.
- Demonstrated expertise in interpreting and describing:
- Organic chemistry structures
- Reaction mechanisms
- Stereochemistry and structural formulas
- Chemical equations
- Spectroscopy figures (NMR, IR, Mass Spectrometry, etc.)
- Laboratory apparatus and experimental illustrations
- Experience with chemistry content from higher education textbooks or scientific publications is highly preferred.
- Secondary expertise in Life Sciences (biology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry) and/or Engineering diagrams is desirable.
- Excellent written English with the ability to translate complex scientific visuals into clear, concise, and accessible descriptions.
- Understanding of digital accessibility principles, including WCAG, and best practices for writing image alternative text.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain consistency across large content sets.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted authoring tools and web-based platforms to create and review accessibility content.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting quality and productivity targets.
- Prior experience in accessibility, educational publishing, technical writing, scientific editing, or content development is an advantage.
