Job Description:
Alger is seeking a motivated and intellectually curious Healthcare Analyst to support coverage of the Healthcare sector for the firm’s U.S. Small and Mid Cap strategies. This role is designed for a more junior analyst with 4–6 years of relevant experience who is eager to expand sector knowledge, strengthen fundamental research skills, and grow within a collaborative, research-driven investment team.
The Analyst will work closely with Portfolio Managers and senior sector analysts, contributing to idea generation, company research, and ongoing portfolio monitoring. The role offers meaningful exposure to the investment process and provides a strong foundation for long-term development as a fundamental equity investor. Duties & Responsibilities:
Fundamental Research & Investment Analysis
- Support fundamental research on small and mid-cap healthcare companies, including financial statement analysis, valuation work, and competitive positioning
- Assist in building, maintaining, and updating financial and valuation models to support investment theses
- Participate in primary research, including management meetings, industry conferences, expert consultations, and interactions with sell-side analysts
- Contribute to internal research notes, company summaries, and investment memoranda
Portfolio & Idea Generation Support
- Assist senior analysts and Portfolio Managers in developing long and short investment ideas consistent with Alger’s investment philosophy
- Monitor portfolio holdings, including earnings releases, news flow, and material developments
- Track healthcare sector trends, regulatory developments, innovation pipelines, and reimbursement dynamics, and share insights with the investment team
- Help prepare materials for Portfolio Manager discussions and investment reviews
Quantitative & Data-Driven Analysis
- Utilize internal quantitative tools and screening reports to help identify potential investment opportunities
- Maintain proprietary databases tracking company fundamentals, product pipelines, and industry metrics
Team Collaboration & Development
- Work closely with healthcare analysts and the broader investment team in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
- Demonstrate increasing ownership of coverage responsibilities over time, with mentorship from senior team members
- Support a culture of intellectual rigor, continuous learning, and attention to detail
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree required in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, science, or a related field
- MBA and/or CFA designation preferred but not required
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above required in a 4.0 scale
- Minimum 3–4 years of buyside experience required
- Experience covering or working within the healthcare sector preferred
- Foundational understanding of healthcare business models, including regulatory, reimbursement, and innovation dynamics
Skills:
- Strong fundamental research capabilities, including financial statement analysis, valuation, and modeling
- Strong fundamental research and analytical skills, including financial modeling, valuation, and industry analysis
- Ability to operate as a healthcare generalist, covering multiple subsectors and business models effectively
- Comfort evaluating a wide range of healthcare companies, including regulatory, reimbursement, and scientific considerations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate investment ideas
- High level of self-motivation, intellectual curiosity, and disciplined work ethic
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple coverage responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Collaborative mindset with confidence to express independent views and challenge assumptions constructively
Salary Expectations: $150,000-175,000 base salary plus discretionary bonus per performance
