Accounting and Reporting Director – APAC and China – Bangalore
The Accounting and Reporting Director is a senior finance leadership role within the International Finance organization, accountable for driving strategic controllership, governance, and financial reporting across APAC and China. The role operates within a globally aligned accounting model, partnering closely with the International Accounting & Reporting Director to ensure consistent decision-making on key accounting judgments, revenue recognition, and reporting practices. In this structure, the role serves as the regional owner of accounting outcomes while enabling a coordinated, single point of interface to International FRA leadership.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Accounting and Reporting and partnering closely with the International Accounting & Reporting Director to drive consistent decisions, streamline escalations, and provide a single point of accountability to International FRA leadership. This role has a high impact on Alcon with financial reporting responsibility for countries with an aggregate revenue of approximately $1.3 Billion, oversight of 45 associates, budget ownership of $2.3 MM and ownership of statutory compliance of 12 legal entities.
Leadership Expectations:
- Serve as the regional accounting and reporting leader, setting vision, priorities, and standards for all FRA activities.
- Champion a strong controllership mindset, ensuring financial integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct.
- Act as the primary escalation point for complex accounting, reporting, and audit matters.
- Drive consistency, simplification, and continuous improvement across regional accounting and reporting processes.
- Partner closely with senior finance, business, tax, and operations leaders to enable informed decision-making.
- Develop a high-performing, engaged, and future-ready accounting and reporting organization.
- Operate in close alignment with the International Accounting & Reporting Director, ensuring coordinated leadership across key accounting positions, standardization efforts, and digital transformation initiatives.
Scope:
- APAC Markets covering (India, APAC Cluster – Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong, ANZ, Korea)
- Manufacturing Plants in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia
- Oversight of China with future expansion to other key markets
- Does not directly manage R2R activities based out of Malaysia capability center
Key Responsibilities:
- Enterprise Accounting & Reporting Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all accounting and financial reporting activities across the region.
- Ensure consistent application of IFRS and the Alcon Manual of Accounting, serving as subject matter authority.
- Lead regional ownership of financial statements, balance sheet integrity, and reporting quality. Thorough review of in-scope Balance sheets at least on a quarterly basis and regular review of revenue recognition models in the region.
- Oversee statutory reporting and audits for all legal entities, ensuring timely completion and high audit quality.
- Represent the region in global accounting, reporting, and policy forums.
- Risk, Controls & Governance
- Ensure coordinated escalation and resolution of complex accounting matters through close alignment with the International Accounting & Reporting Director, enabling efficient decision-making and clear communication to senior leadership.
- Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate financial reporting and compliance risks.
- Lead responses to internal and external audits, including ownership of remediation plans.
- Ensure robust governance over revenue recognition, intercompany activities, and complex transactions.
- Business Partnership & Influence
- Act as a trusted advisor to regional leadership, providing clear insights on financial and accounting implications.
- Influence business decisions by embedding accounting expertise early in commercial and strategic discussions.
- Collaborate closely with BP&A, Tax, Technical Accounting, and FRA Operations to ensure seamless information flow.
- People & Organizational Leadership
- Lead and develop multi-country FRA teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Build leadership capability and succession plans across the organization.
- Drive talent development through coaching, mentoring, and targeted training programs.
- Lead change management initiatives related to systems, processes, and organizational transformation
Travel Expectations:
Travel on a need basis. Current estimate: 30% travel in Year 1 with an expectation of reduced travel in the future.
What you will bring to the role
Education:
(minimum/desirable)
- Chartered Accountant or CPA is a must.
Languages:
- Fluent English + other languages (mandarin or Japanese) a plus
Experience:
- 15+ years of subject matter expertise in accounting, finance, internal controls implementation or accounting advisory roles.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS and related accounting guidance is a must
- Experience in big 4 audit firm in Audit and or Technical Accounting is preferrable.
- Demonstrated ability to excel in talent development, team building, and change management.
- Experience working effectively in a multinational, matrix organization with exposure to global processes.
- Proficiency in SAP and other ERP systems, along with relevant applications.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fostering productive collaboration and effective leadership.
