Emper.ai is building a retail/personal insurance advisory model targeted at employees. We aren't just adding a chatbot to a website; we are building an AI-powered engine that handles the entire insurance process.
As an early engineering hire, you are the most important person on the team. You aren't just here to write code; you are here to build the brain of our company. Success in this role means taking a concept—like an AI that gives smart insurance advice—and turning it into a stable, fast tool that thousands of people can use reliably. You will work directly with the founders to set the technical standards for everything we build next.
The tech stack
- Backend: Python, FastAPI
- Database: Supabase / PostgreSQL (Schema design + optimization)
- AI: RAG pipelines, OpenAI/Anthropic APIs, Vector DBs
- Infra: Docker, AWS/GCP, CI/CD
- Frontend: React (Review & Integration)
We are not looking for a backend developer who has merely experimented with ChatGPT wrappers.
Apply only if you meet the following:
- You have shipped customer-facing AI products (not internal POCs).
- You have designed and optimized RAG pipelines under real-world latency and accuracy constraints.
- You can architect a database schema on Monday and deploy a Dockerized FastAPI service on Tuesday without hand-holding.
- You are based in Thane/Mumbai and have 3–5 years of experience.
Responsibilities
Build the Core AI Advisory Engine & MCP Layer: Design and ship the RAG-based engine that allows our AI to read insurance documents and provide accurate recommendations. You will build the core that makes Emper.ai truly intelligent for real users, not just functional.
Own the Backend: Build and manage the API layer. Your month-1 task will be designing scalable PostgreSQL schemas for the advisory engine. You will use FastAPI to architect data models that scale from 10 employer accounts to 10,000.
Manage the Infrastructure: Independently take charge of deploying code to GCP—handling CI/CD, Docker, and secrets management—while ensuring our servers remain highly available.
Oversee the Frontend: You don’t need to be a designer, but you will collaborate with our external partners to ensure the web interface integrates perfectly with your backend.
Qualifications
3–5 Years of Real AI Experience: You have built and shipped vertical AI products using LLMs in production (not internal tools or POCs). You know how to handle and fix non-deterministic AI behavior.
Python Mastery: You are an expert in Python and FastAPI. You write clean, organized, and readable production-grade code.
Database Skills: You are proficient in SQL and Supabase/PostgreSQL. You know how to structure data to ensure long-term scalability.
Cloud & Tools: You are comfortable using Docker and managing GCP settings independently. You do not require a DevOps engineer to launch your work.
Location: You are based in or can commute to Thane/Mumbai. We are in "build mode," and in-person collaboration is vital for this role.
Bonus (Good to have)
Prior insurance or fintech experience. What matters more is the curiosity and discipline to deeply understand IRDAI regulatory constraints and build a product that operates reliably within them.
