About The Company
Yuna Health is committed to radically transforming the accessibility and delivery of mental health support. Our mission is to bridge the significant gaps in mental health care by providing instant, private, and 24/7 support at the push of a button. Recognizing that many individuals face long waiting times of up to 48 days to see a therapist and often cannot afford traditional care, Yuna offers a timely and effective alternative. Our innovative approach leverages advanced technology to deliver immediate assistance, ensuring that mental health support is accessible to all who need it. As we continue to grow rapidly, each team member plays a vital role in shaping the future of mental health technology and making a meaningful difference in people's lives.
About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and passionate Backend AI Engineer to join Yuna Health's dynamic team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of developing Yuna’s core conversational intelligence systems. Your work will encompass retrieval, memory, safety, and evaluation modules that power our AI-driven mental health support platform. You will be responsible for shipping user-visible improvements rapidly while maintaining high standards of empathy, reliability, and safety. Your contributions will directly impact the quality and safety of the conversations our users have with Yuna, helping to create a more compassionate and effective mental health support system.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess over five years of experience building and deploying backend systems in a production environment, demonstrating strong skills in systems and API design. Hands-on experience with LangGraph and building agentic systems, including tool calling, memory management, and orchestration, is essential. You should have a solid understanding of deploying and managing services on Kubernetes, with a proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve production issues. Expertise in Python and modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow is required. Additionally, proficiency with relational and vector/search systems, as well as real-time communication protocols like sockets, WebRTC, or LiveKit, is highly desirable. Comfort working in ambiguous environments and creating innovative systems from the ground up is crucial for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement agentic flows, including tool use, planning, multi-turn memory, and safe retrieval mechanisms tailored for mental health use cases.
- Collaborate closely with clinical psychologists, both internal and external, to ensure the efficacy and safety of Yuna’s conversational AI systems.
- Build and maintain an evaluation framework that includes benchmarks, judging models, rubrics for conversational quality, safety, and helpfulness.
- Design, develop, and operate backend services for conversation state management, user memory, retrieval, and integration with external tools via REST and gRPC protocols.
- Work alongside front-end teams to create APIs, perform quality assurance, and implement features seamlessly into the user interface.
- Implement safety and alignment layers, such as self-harm detection, red-teaming, refusal strategies, and escalation protocols, all aligned with clinical guidelines.
- Optimize system performance focusing on latency, cost efficiency, and overall quality of service.
- Partner with product, sales, and user teams to scope and develop new features that enhance user experience and safety.
Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, complemented by equity options.
- Remote-first work environment offering flexibility to support work-life balance.
- Be part of a fast-growing, talented, and empathetic team dedicated to revolutionizing mental health care.
- Opportunity to make a tangible impact by building cutting-edge AI systems that improve lives daily.
