About First Step AI
We help small business owners take their first steps into AI — practically, simply, and without the jargon. Our work spans AI workflow implementation, custom automations, and hands-on client consulting. We build real things for real businesses, and we move fast.
The Role
You will be building custom AI-powered web applications and automation systems for international clients. Every project is different: SaaS platforms, workflow automations, API integrations, AI-powered data pipelines.
This is a hands-on build role. You receive detailed architecture specs and project briefs from the founder, build production-ready output, test it, and ship it. We are not looking for someone who manages. We are looking for someone who delivers.
What You Will Be Doing
Building full-stack web applications from spec. Our current stack includes Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind, and Supabase, but this changes per project.
Building and maintaining automation workflows in n8n with third-party API integrations: CRMs, accounting platforms, Google Workspace, webhooks, and whatever else the project needs.
Writing and iterating on AI prompts for data extraction, classification, scoring, and content generation using LLM APIs.
Testing your own output before handoff.
Working across 4-6 client projects per month with different requirements, different tech stacks, and tight timelines.
Communicating directly with the founder on architecture decisions, blockers, and progress.
What We Need From You
5+ years of experience building and shipping full-stack web applications.
Demonstrated experience using AI tools to build: Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar.
Strong fundamentals across frontend and backend. We do not care which specific frameworks you have used. We care that you can pick up any stack quickly and ship production-quality work.
Experience integrating third-party APIs: OAuth2 flows, webhook handling, token management, and working with undocumented or poorly documented APIs without getting stuck.
Comfortable with workflow automation platforms like n8n, Make, or similar.
Familiarity with AI and LLM integration: prompt engineering, structured output parsing, building AI into real products.
A genuinely adaptable mindset. AI is moving fast, and so are we. We need someone who is actively curious, questions their current approaches, updates how they work, and leans into change rather than waiting for it. If you are still doing things the same way you did two years ago, this is probably not the right fit.
What Gives You an Edge
You have built something with AI tools that you can actually demo. Not a tutorial project: something you directed and shipped.
You are comfortable being dropped into a completely new tech stack or API and figuring it out fast.
You have worked with international clients and understand async communication, and delivering without someone checking in every hour.
A portfolio of real builds you shipped. GitHub profile, live projects, case studies, screenshots with context: whatever proves you have built and delivered real things end to end.
