The Behind the Wheel Instructor educates students through behind the wheel instruction to prepare new drivers for the safe operation of motor vehicles and the knowledge and road test.
Part Time: Approximately 20 hrs/wk
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Educate students trying to earn their driver’s license in the proper driving skills, techniques and laws necessary to operate a motor vehicle.
- Observe students’ driving ability; provides instruction in safe driving techniques in both highway, suburban and city driving conditions.
- Ensure that the safety of the student is always maintained during the on-road instructional sessions.
- Meet students at an assigned location and at designated times.
- Teach students the skills needed to prepare them for handling a motor vehicle on streets and highways.
- Maintain accurate records of behind-the-wheel driver education activities.
- Communicate with both the parent and student, when needed, on the progress of each student.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Report all accidents and/or potential hazards to the vehicle or building. Also reports maintenance issues involving the vehicles to the department manager as soon as possible.
- Ensure adequate supervision of students.
- Maintain licensure at the state level, unless otherwise noted and stay current with best practices
- Perform other miscellaneous office duties to ensure the program runs smoothly and company goals are consistently met.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school degree or equivalent.
- 6 months or more experience as an instructor, teacher, trainer or coach is required
- Valid/Current Minnesota Driver’s License with a good driving record required
- Minnesota Class D Driver’s Instructors license required
Important Note: All incumbents are required to undergo an extensive background check process conducted by the BCA and FBI.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience using Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word & Excel)
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
- Ability to sit for 2 or more hours at a time during behind-the-wheel instruction
- Accuracy and attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve problems is essential
- Good organizational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
