Position Overview
Counselor Captains serve as on-the-ground assistant directors, responsible for logistics, staff support, and operational oversight. Captains identify gaps, solve problems in real time, and ensure camps run smoothly behind the scenes — allowing Camp Directors to focus on higher-level leadership.
This is a top-tier leadership role for proven Lead Counselors ready for advanced responsibility.
Our CampGrippen counselor's role is to maximize the camper's experience every day, making their summer vacation a special, fun, and memorable time!
Job Duties:

(B) Captain Counselor Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily check-ins with Lead Counselors
- Oversee curriculum implementation and adjustments
- Manage snack inventory and distribution
- Upload camp photos and support documentation
- Coordinate activity setup and daily logistics
- Manage gear and equipment inventory
- Mentor CITs and complete feedback forms
- Support end-of-day cleanup and reset
- Identify operational gaps and proactively fix them
(C) Supervising Campers throughout the day:
- Lead groups of 6 to 8 kids through a specified camp curriculum under the supervision of the Camp Director.
- Create a fun and active environment for every camper so that they are excited to come back the next day!
- Provide incident response to accidents and injuries as required.
- Encourage campers to try their best!
- Give Lots of High Fives!
- Make the kids your priority and focus.
- Make the entirety of each and every camper's day at CampGrippen awesome!
- Prepare for camp by setting up.
- Cleaning up and breaking down camp equipment.
- Facility housekeeping.
Job requirements:
- Minimum 1 summer (2 preferred) as a CampGrippen Counselor
- Must currently hold Lead Counselor status
- Demonstrated maturity, consistency, and strong communication skills
- Prefer applicants with extensive ÜG Climbing background (e.g. 2+ years participation in ÜG clubs and or teams)
- Applicants must have weekday (8 am to 5 pm) during the summer and must be available to work a MINIMUM of 6+ full 40-hour work weeks through the summer AND 10 days of school-year camps (Fall/Winter/Spring).
- Applicants must be available for our CampGrippen training days. Mandatory training days are on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in mid-May. Dates will be announced upon job offer.
- Previous climbing experience (1+ years preferred) and ability to pass a top rope belay certification.
- Ability to climb at a 5.9 or higher level.
- Ability to stand for duration of shifts (8 hours).
- Ability to wear a climbing harness and perform top rope belay for others for 2 hours without a break.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs and over soft/uneven surfaces (e.g. soft padded bouldering flooring) while providing assistance to others.
- Ability to clearly communicate with campers and their parents in person and over the phone.
- Ability to lead groups (8 or more people) including providing clear verbal instructions, group management, and conflict resolution.
- Ability to lift and move boxes up to 50 lbs without assistance from others.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (American Red Cross (re)certifications are offered semi-annually).
- Climbing Wall Association (CWA) Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) Certification (certification courses are offered semi-annually).
- Must pass a criminal background check (applicable to employees 18+).
Captain Counselors Compensation & Benefits
- End-of-Summer Bonus: $100 per week worked as a Captain Counselor (contingent on attendance and performance expectations)
- School-Year Camp Bonus: $25 per day

- Applicants must have 6 or more weeks of availability M-F 8a to 5p during the summer season.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs and over soft/uneven surfaces (e.g. soft padded bouldering flooring) while providing assistance to others.
- Ability to clearly communicate with customers in person, on the phone, and via electronic messaging (e.g. e-mail).
- Ability to lead groups (8 or more people) including providing clear verbal instructions, group management, a conflict resolution.
- Ability to lift and move boxes up to 50 lbs without assistance from others.
- Ability to work at a computer using standard computer interfaces (keyboard, mouse).
- CPR/First Aid Certification (American Red Cross certifications are offered semi-annually)
- Climbing Wall Association (CWA) Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) Certification (certification courses are offered semi-annually)
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Minimum 18 years old or 16 years old with 480 hours of previous work experience at Ubergrippen as a Junior Counselor/Team Member/Youth Program Instructor.
