Position Summary
Join athenahealth as a Lead Member of Technical Staff on the engineering team in Chennai, working in a hybrid model. In this role, you will help modernize a large-scale enterprise reporting platform as it moves from a monolithic transactional architecture to a cloud-native, self-service analytics experience. You will work across data modeling, cloud optimization, and full-stack development to deliver solutions that improve reporting capabilities for healthcare providers. This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager.
About The Team
The team is modernizing athenahealth’s enterprise reporting platform and moving from legacy systems to a cloud-native analytics experience. The work includes building scalable data models, improving query performance, managing cost and performance at scale, and supporting migration of complex SQL across database systems. The team partners with data engineers, product managers, business analysts, and other engineering teams to deliver solutions used by healthcare providers every day. The environment includes Snowflake, Java, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS, and the work combines technical depth with system design and hands-on development.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable data models in Snowflake, with attention to performance and cost efficiency in multi-tenant environments.
- Develop full-stack solutions using Java and Node.js for backend services and React for frontend applications.
- Design and implement service-to-service authorization mechanisms, including OAuth and role-based access control patterns for relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Architect and build web applications on AWS using security, scalability, and reliability best practices.
- Lead technical design discussions and code reviews, and help guide teammates on architecture and implementation patterns.
- Collaborate with product and UX partners to translate business requirements into technical solutions that balance immediate needs with long-term platform goals.
- Improve query performance, warehouse efficiency, and cost optimization to support analytics at scale.
- Partner with stakeholders to define data governance standards and support self-service analytics capabilities.
- Use AI tools and coding assistants to help translate SQL across dialects, review implementation options, and speed up development work, while validating outputs before use in production code or data changes.
Additional Job Responsibilities
- Contribute to the migration strategy from legacy SQL systems to modern data platforms, using automation where appropriate.
- Collaborate with cloud engineering partners on application onboarding and scaling in Kubernetes-based environments.
- Support integration of analytics platforms and related business intelligence tools into the technology ecosystem.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support platform reliability and performance.
- Document architectural decisions and create technical specifications for complex features.
- Contribute to the engineering community through knowledge sharing sessions and technical presentations.
- Assist in evaluating new technologies and tools that could improve data and analytics capabilities.
- Lead large features that span multiple stories and work items.
- Mentor junior developers on secure coding and privacy practices.
- Review code with an emphasis on both empathy and consistent security and privacy standards.
- Balance stakeholder commitments with code quality and help clarify tradeoffs and delivery options.
Expected Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8–12 years of experience in software development with a focus on enterprise-scale applications.
- Strong experience in data modeling.
- Experience with Snowflake or a similar cloud data platform, including warehouse optimization techniques.
- Proficiency in full-stack development with Java and/or Node.js for backend services and React for frontend development.
- Experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases in production environments.
- Experience with AWS services and cloud-native web application development.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and container orchestration concepts preferred.
- Familiarity with analytics platforms such as Sigma or similar business intelligence tools preferred.
